Criteria for Application

This training course is designed for Counselling and Psychotherapy practitioners internationally. The resources you will see will be aimed at papers and websites regarding therapeutic assistance, and the interactive demonstrations will be therapy emails or IRC therapeutic sessions. However, it is suitable for other organizations that wish to use an online presence to offer support, advice or befriending to their clients, employees or service users. The theoretical approach within the course to the psychology of cyberspace has a universal appeal across any field using an online presence to facilitate a relationship with another human being.

Counsellors and Psychotherapists should be members of a professional body and abide by their Codes of Ethics and Practice. The course itself adheres to the BACP Code of Ethics and Practice. You should be trained to at least Diploma level (or international equivalent), and have sufficient experience of post-qualification supervised Counselling. Other Mental Health Practitioners should also be trained and be part of an organization or company that offers their own supervision. Also required is a basic understanding of the additional ethical considerations that need to be considered when working online.

Trainees in the UK are expected to purchase a copy of the BACP Guidelines for Online Counselling and Psychotherapy, available from www.bacp.co.uk, or the equivalent provided by a chosen affiliated organisation after discussion with the trainer. Trainees outside the UK should discuss their ethical guideline provision within their affiliated organisations with the trainer before embarking on Module 3 of the course.

The award and webstamp given on completion of the course is not a licence to practice Online Therapy; it is in recognition of Continuing Professional Development. Assessment of your suitability to take the course is done by Kate Anthony and is based on qualifications, experience, position and ability to communicate and organise at a basic level using a computer, modem and the Internet. If you have any queries regarding your suitability before wishing to complete the application form, please email info@onlinecounsellors.co.uk. This includes more information on the possible additional requirements of trainees with special needs.
